ABOUT (HŪM)US
What the Heck is Humus?!
Humus (pronounced hyōo·məs) is the substance that distinguishes fertile soil from lifeless dirt. In Latin the word means soil, earth, or ground and is the root of the words human and humility. It’s the magical material that makes human life possible and is akin to the womb of the planet that gives birth to all life on Earth — the mother of us all.
Just as seeds planted in humus-rich soil grow into healthy plants, children cared for by well-nourished mothers (and fathers) grow into well-nourished adults.
Hūmus Collective exists to deeply nourish mothers with insight, information, and inspiration along their intentional motherhood journey. We believe that as more-and-more mothers blossom into their full potential, so will the whole of humanity.
A Love Letter from our Founder

When I became a mother, I was riddled with inadequacy, self-loathing, toxic shame, maladaptive perfectionism, nervous system dysregulation, crippling emotional illiteracy, and the proverbial curse of the good girl. I was thoroughly depleted and in need of deep nourishment but didn’t have a clue where to find it.
I planted myself firmly in the only resource available to me at the time – the religious traditions of my parents and grandparents. I committed myself fully and drew up what nourishment I could. But the environment was still lacking the essential nutrients I needed to flourish. In a leap of faith, I uprooted myself and my young family from the only community we had ever known and looked elsewhere for a place to put down roots and call home.
It was an exhilarating and exhausting journey of trial-and-error, but I eventually found my way to an abundance of resources that filled me up and deeply nourished me — body, mind, spirit, heart and soul. I found beauty, sustenance, and Divinity in every culture, tradition, belief system, and walk of life I encountered.

Today I’m healthier and happier than I’ve ever been. I’m no longer riddled with the frustrations that marked my early days of motherhood. I’ve forgiven myself for the pain I’ve caused and have dedicated my life to alleviating as much suffering as I can. I do my best and compost the rest. I know, love, and trust myself. I do what I love, and I love what I do and I love my life (something I never believed would be possible). I’m still learning and growing and practicing self-compassion every. single. day. But I’ve finally found the fertile soil I was searching for — the humble humus of my own heart — my true home and source of nourishment, inside me all along.
Hūmus Collective was born out of my soul’s desire to support and nourish other mothers as they traverse the same arduous terrain I’ve covered. It’s my hope and prayer that Hūmus Collective, and all that it offers, will be a rich source of nourishment on your personal journey back to your own inner source – the rich dark soil of your own tender heart and that you’ll pass this gift onto your children.
With all my love, Tamber ♡

“The key to healing and to growing whole is not suppressing symptoms, eliminating wounds, or eradicating subpersonalities but, rather, cultivating our wholeness –— the horizontal wholeness of the Self as well as the vertical wholeness afforded by our relationships with Soul and Spirit.”

“It seems reasonable to suggest that global culture change is our . . . most immediate crisis — and opportunity. We must redesign all our major cultural institutions — education, governments, economies, and religions — to be in partnership with Earth systems. We must learn to raise all children and teens in alignment with nature and natural cycles. In particular, we must preserve the innocence of early childhood; we must refashion middle childhood as a time of wonder and free play in the natural world; we must assist young teens to be as authentic and creative as they can, with themselves and others. And we must engender full societal support for late teens . . . as they explore and are transformed by the mysteries of nature and psyche. And we must do this for all people, in all socioeconomic classes, in all societies. . . . Is this possible? No. But let’s not let that stop us . . .”
